French at the Market: Open Call for Risograph Artwork

French at the Market: Open Call for Risograph Artwork

Malaika Mchopa |

Fresh prints. Thoughtful materials. Creative community.

French Paper is excited to announce French at the Market, a new juried open call celebrating risograph artwork, creative process, and the artists who bring ideas to life.

In partnership with Krasl Print Lab, this inaugural project invites artists to explore the connection between materials, making, and community through original risograph artwork.

Inspired by farmers markets, art fairs, print swaps, and independent maker culture, French at the Market celebrates the joy of discovering something thoughtfully made. Much like a market brings together growers, makers, and neighbors, this project brings together artists, printmakers, collectors, and creative communities through a shared appreciation for craft and collaboration.

Whether you’re a longtime printmaker or exploring risograph for the first time, we invite you to share your work, tell your story, and become part of the inaugural French at the Market Collection.

A Celebration of Risograph Printing

Risograph printing is a process built around experimentation, color, texture, and creativity. Through French at the Market, artists are invited to create original work that highlights the possibilities of printmaking while showcasing the unique relationship between artwork and materials.

Selected artists will have the opportunity to collaborate with French Paper and Krasl Print Lab to bring their designs to life as limited-edition risograph prints.

Artist Awards

Three winning artworks will be selected for the inaugural French at the Market Collection.

Each selected artist will receive:

  • $250 Visa Gift Card

  • French Paper stock for production

  • Production support and resources through Krasl Print Lab

  • Artist spotlight opportunities through French Paper and Krasl marketing channels

  • Inclusion in the French at the Market collection

Submit Your Work

Artists are invited to submit original artwork created specifically for the French at the Market theme.

Submit Your work HERE

Submissions should include:

  • One original artwork

  • Brief artist statement

  • Portfolio website or Instagram account (optional)

Artwork may be submitted as a digital design or completed risograph print. Selected artists must be able to provide production-ready files suitable for risograph reproduction.

Artists are also encouraged to share behind-the-scenes content documenting their creative process. Photos and videos may be featured across French Paper and Krasl Print Lab’s social media channels, websites, and promotional materials.

Things to Consider

Will French at the Market be an in-person event?
French at the Market is primarily an online open call and sales initiative rather than a traditional gallery exhibition. Selected artwork will be featured on French Paper's and Krasl Art Center's websites and social media channels. Winning pieces may also be displayed in the Krasl Print Lab and at select French Paper events or promotional opportunities.

Will the artwork be available for sale?
Yes. The three selected winning artworks will be reproduced as a limited edition of 25 signed risograph prints and sold exclusively through French Paper's online store. French Paper will provide the paper for each edition.

Selected artists are welcome to produce their own edition of 25 prints if they have access to a risograph printer. If they do not have access to a machine or are not local, French Paper can coordinate printing at the Krasl Art Center Print Lab. In those cases, the prints will be produced in collaboration with the artist to ensure the final edition reflects their vision as closely as possible while embracing the unique characteristics of the risograph process.

French Paper will handle fulfillment and sales of the completed editions. As outlined in the open call, each selected artist will receive a $250 honorarium in lieu of royalties or proceeds from print sales.

Should I submit one artwork or multiple files?
Please submit one original artwork for consideration. The upload section allows multiple files so applicants can include supporting materials if needed, such as detail images or alternate views of the same piece, but only one artwork will be considered as the official entry.

Are there size restrictions?
There is no required finished print size for submissions. However, selected artwork will ultimately need to be produced as a risograph print, so designs should be created at a resolution and scale that can be reproduced successfully. If your piece is selected, we'll work with you to determine the most appropriate final print size.

What if the final ink colors differ from my original artwork?
That's completely expected and is part of the nature of risograph printing. Because the Krasl Print Lab has a specific library of available inks, the final printed colors may vary from your submitted file. We embrace those unique characteristics of the risograph process, and selected artists will work with the print team to achieve the strongest possible result using the available inks.
